Challenge #55: Brought to you by the number 5

This month we have very special guests. We did a Design Team swap with the fabulous girls over at Gutter Girlz.

This challenge is all about the number 5...

We are on challenge number 55 so how fun would it be to use increments of 5.

Ex: 5 different pattern papers, 5 buttons, 5 pictures, 5 misc embellishments...you get the drift....if you use it make sure it is in increments of 5... easy peasy right? This will be a great way to finish off those packages of embellishments that you bought and used a few of them and still have a gazillion left...or better yet..do you save your scraps of pp? Pull those out and use them...just make sure you use 5!

I found this great picture of my mom and niece in the bluebonnets from some years ago ..and made me think of how close they are now and how much she loves those girls ...5 different papers, 5 flowers, 5 brads, 5 label stickers, 5 stamped hearts and a title with 5 letters...thanks for looking ...have fun with this challenge!!!

Hello gang!
I used the number 5 in my title as well as 5 letters for the subtitle. I also used used 5 different tags all over the LO. 5 different dymo label items that best represent my grandpa (jadka) in polish. This is his staple, he has to have these things on him at all times. Like a woman and her purse.

Challenge #52: Floss it up

Embroidery floss is becoming more and more popular and features in the majority of Scrapbook Kits these days. We are sure that most of you have a skein of embroidery floss stashed away somewhere...so, go find it and include it in a prominent way on your project. The more the better. If by some small, itsy bitsy teeny tiny chance or miracle you do not have floss in your stash of crap have no fear as for next month's challenge we feel confident we can accommodate you :)

I have lots of floss but unfortunately it looks like a volcano erupted in my room and all i could find was this one. {deep sigh} I guess it's time to clean.

I am totally hooked on embroidery floss and I can honestly say that even if I continue to use it on every layout or card - if will not run out until 2025. Yep, *stands-up-and-raises-hands*: "my name is Kim, and I am a floss-a-holic".

Angela:

I used to cross-stitch, so I have lots of floss. While I like to stitch on layouts, for this one I used the floss to wrap around my chipboard shapes - the flowers at the bottom with just a little floss as an accent, while the heart is completely covered! Next time I will paint the chipboard first so any gaps in the floss don't show as much.

Michelle:

Its sad to say, that I had one piece of floss to work with. Can you imagine the shock and disbelief I had when I realized that? 4 million miles of ribbon and 1 string of floss. Well, can't say how long it was in that box but I used it. I tied off all my buttons with it and criss crossed some details. Did I mention that I didn't have a needle? What kind of a scrapper have I become...LOL

Sarah:

I have a many containers of floss as I used to cross-stitch and quilt - a lot! It surprised me though that I've never used it that much in my scrap booking, oh sure I sew with my machine all the time, but by hand? - pfft, I'll always find an easier way! I used thread on this layout by hanging the little letter flags at the top. I concealed some double sided tape underneath to keep them in one place. I also did some cross-stitching around the layout to continue the floss theme. Who said can only floss your teeth? Go on and floss your layout too!

Leslie:

I have this art hanging on the wall of my kitchen that is a collection of collages that are themed cooking/holly homemaker. Every once in a while, I make an 8 x 6 piece that fits in that theme and it gets hung up on a vintage wooden hanger. This time I chose an image advertising Vins Cafe, and used my floss to embroider a vine to complement the image. Please visit my blog here to see the rest!!

This challenge kinda backfired on me. I decided what I wanted to do, got half-way through my stitching and ran out of the colour of floss I was using. Which meant I had to go buy more. And it was on sale. So instead of using up my crap, I actually came home with 8 more skeins of floss. Because it was cheap and I couldn't just leave it there. Hmmm.
Anywho ... this is a photo of my dad when he was small. I always think he looked like Spanky from the Little Rascals with his wee hat turns sideways and his short pants. I tried a few different ways to add journaling but thought it looked cluttered. I'll probably just write about it on the back if I can't figure out a way to add it to the layout that I like.

To come up with my background, I used a scrap piece of 12x12 and free-hand drew the design of vines and leaves. I used repositionable adhesive to attach it to my cardstock and punched holes along the design. I love how the ecru floss stands out so much from the dark background.

I used to cross-stitching last year so I have a lot of floss in many colors. For this art-journal page I chose pink and white floss, I hand-stitched the edges of the pages and I added a third page sewn at the edge of the right page.
My art journal page has a lot of layers: acrylic paint, inks, collage, watercolors, glimmer mist, wax pastels, etc... The image is a photocopy from an old 1960 italian magazine, "Annabella".

Loved diggin through my floss and picking out fun colors to play with and using them on my pages. I just penciled the letters on my page and while watching t.v. i stitched the letters over the pencil markings. Thanks for looking!

This was an easy challenege for me since i use hand sititching with my floss in most all of my layouts,so i took extra time for the v stitch and florish!I cant wait to see what others come up with!

We are also pleased as punch to present you with a layout from Guest Designer Jill Oriente this month. Isn't this layout just darling? We love how cleverly Jill used her floss to create the flowers - gorgeous!

Challenge #51: 20/10

Welcome the new decade. Now that we are well underway in a new year we want to celebrate the year 2010. Use up your alpha's to create a title with a minimum of 20 letters and add a further 10 embellishments of any sort to your project. Or instead of the title, include journaling of at least 20 words and 10 embellies of any sort. Be creative and choose your own 20/10 combination (20 different papers, 10 different colors...etc etc)

I am working on a mini book at the moment, which includes concert tickets/passes and pictures of gigs I have been at. While I still remember the fun times I thought it best to get them down on paper :)

For this layout, I used 10 different papers and created 20 punched cardstock circles as my embellishments.

It wasn't even as difficult as I thought to use so many papers. Go on and have a try yourself.
By the way: the picture shows me and Leatherwolf bassist Paul, after their 1989 gig in Hamburg/Germany

I have tons of scraps of patterned paper on my desk, this is the occasion to finally use them! I used 20 different patterned papers cut in stripes, and 10 text lines for my journaling (including the title).
I altered my photo with warm water, sand paper and oil pastels. For the title I outlined chipboard letters with a fine marker.

Leslie:


I have been wanting to scrap these photos for a long time (2005, yikes!) My husband and I spend a lot of time refurbishing our old apartment, so the title was not hard to come by! My full title is 20 letters/numbers, and I used 10 paper embellishments and 10 pieces of paper to frame my photos.



Angela:

I thought this challenge would be harder than it was! My title is twenty letters/numbers and because the theme was "10 Things About You," I bulleted each thing with a button or brad, using ten embellishments! I have three kids so I ended up making a similar page for each of them, which you can view, along with a materials list, on my blog.

Tara:

I've had these photos since last spring and couldn't seem to do anything with them. Yes ... that's a frog eating a mouse. I challenged myself to use exactly 20 letters for my title. And for my 10 embellishments, I've used Prima Pearls & Crystals here and there. I've used Up The Street's February kit and you can see more photos of my layout on my blog.

I am addicted to flowers but with two boys I do not get to use them as much as I would like too ...so I decided to use them as part of my background and then I saw in Scrapbook Trends this cool page that this gal did with stacking their photos ...sometimes I wish there were 10 of me to get things done around this house ...lol

Girls, do I have ribbons. This challenge was just begging to use snippets of the stash I have. So with this challenge I used 20 of them and in a row. I wanted to keep all of the color onto one side and I still had to put 10 somethings on it before I finished, without it looking too ridiculous. BUTTONS, glorious little plastic buttons. I had to refrain from using more than 10 though and restraint is a word I don't like to use much,

but what scrapper does. LOL

Brianna:

I was so excited for this challenge,i have seen the use of jumbled letters in a title before and had to put my spin on it!i am a BIG fan of handstitching on my layouts,so i stitched 20 letters for my title,and for my star border i used,yep you guessed it,10 of them!Yay for 2010!

I doodled 20 lines in black pen, created two lines of bling – one has 20 dots the other has 10, there are 20 words in my journaling, I sewed on 10 buttons and added 10 pearls to the ribbon along the bottom. I also inked the edges of the pp along the bottom, the arrows are stamped and the little bird is chipboard. There are more close-ups on my my blog.

Challenge #45: Packing Materials or any non scrappy item

This month we want to see some packing materials or any item that is not a "normal" scrappy item...ya know...like bubble wrap, packing tape, masking tape, band aid's, chop sticks ;) anything that is not a standard scrappy product.

Kim

I love using packing materials on my projects. Whenever I am looking for that "one" thing to set off my layout, I tend to grab some masking tape or stamp parts of the background with the help of painted bubble wrap. In this example I used some white paint on a piece of bubble wrap and pressed it onto the background for a accented look. Additionally I write my journaling on two pieces of overlapping masking tape (which I distressed by running an inpad lightly over them)

Greta's:

Yep that is band aid's. Anyone who knows me or follows my personal blog knows i LOVE LOVE LOVE anything skully...yay for me it is the "in" thing right now because i can find all kinds of stuff...before i had to really search.

We can't wait to see your layouts..be creative..think outside the embellishment box :P be sure to link us so we can ooh and Ahh or slap ourselves on the forehead and say "why didn't i think of that". Dontcha hate when you have that moment?

Challenge #43: Embellish It!

This month we are using the pre packaged embellishments. 3 or more will do....but minimum 3...easy peasy...let's see what you do...

This is using the June Rise and Shine kit from Noel Mignon. I am in love with this kit and have made some puurty things with it.
I used several pre packaged things on this one. Which made me want to stop hoarding all my packages and use them...i mean seriously it is not doing me any good in the wrappers right...

Liz's:
Once I started digging through my embellies for this challenge, I realized I should have purchased stock in Heidi Swapp photo corners and Love, Elsie epoxy stickers. Seriously. Anywho, I managed to use a decent handful, but could make the same exact layout 12 more times and still have more corners and stickers leftover. I do like the look of the corners as a border; maybe you could even paint yours or mist them for a different look!

The journaling is on a Sassafras chipboard embellishment and the papers are Cosmo Cricket. The Bazzill scalloped I've had since 2007 when I cut a bunch before my lss went out of business 'to keep from running out'. Yeah, like that will ever happen!

And is Greta's little Melana just a beautiful little girl or what?? Watch out!

I just adore flowers and buttons and you will always find one or the other or more likely even both on my projects. The flowers are Fancy Pants and Hero Arts (I always buy them in bulk) and the buttons are Rusty Pickle

Challenge #36: Give Thanks

In honor of the upcoming thanksgiving holidays...pull out last years fall papers, embellishments and ribbons and scrap it. It can be about what you are thankful for or just a silly ole topic using up the papers.

Thought I'd share some wreaths that i've made over the last few years. All the paper elements on them are scraps. The first one uses little bit and pieces that i've tried to use on other layouts, but ended up ditching them and collecting them in a baby food jar, like buttons, flowers, etc. The first wreath is also made from scratch with a $3 clearance grape vine wreath from Michael's and some clearance items from Walmart's seasonal aisle last year (they've been sitting in a rubbermaid bin awaiting my holiday spirit).


The second is made from the garland strands you can also find at Michael's. I tied the two ends together, made each little card, tied them off with eyelets and ribbon, added the letters to spell 'Thankful', the tied off with a bow to hand.

Challenge #35: In STITCHES

sorry girls i am running behind as usual. This week we want you to

sew up something, use a template, sewing machine or just needle and thread the old fashioned way...whatever way you choose we want to see the sewing skillz

Sometimes just a little hand stitching can make a big difference in a simple layout.
Dana's:
I am all thumbs when it comes to sewing.. but I actually hand sewed the stitches and cut the little chick from a template and some felt.

Liz's:

I've seen this done several places, using the sewing lines as a grid of sorts. So, I thought I'd give it a try. It didn't come out exactly as I had envisioned and covered up most of the grid. I intended to put little patterned paper scrap squares here and there inside the grid boxes. My layout is 8.5x11, so maybe it would have worked better with a 12x12. I also had to use the large pp strips to cover up my super 'bad' sewing skillz!
